Musical Allsorts - July 2014

Be safe in the sun

Here the men, and tenors, of P&P Singers demonstrate ways of protecting one’s head when exposed to the sun. In particular, it confirms what an essential component of a gentleman’s apparel is his handkerchief.

Safety in the sun

Programme Note. I can’t be certain but I think this was “Ave Verum”. Might be wrong though.

As I write this in the chill of a dark, soaking December day my mind is cast forward to those distant balmy days in July when we will bask in the warmth of Summer again. And, when I think of July, my heart leaps a little because July means another P&P Summer concert at the Layard Theatre.

Yes, the date will be Saturday 5th July, so, quickly, mark it in your diary now. Oh, and put in a reminder during March or April to order some tickets well in advance, it’s always best to be safe.

Now we are in the mood, let us think about what we have in store.

The concert is named “Musical Allsorts”, not just for those of a sweet tooth, but also for those who enjoy an invigorating chord clash or two.

P&P brings you another A to Z of music, yes, from “Ave Verum” to “Zip-a-dee-do-dah”, a perfect pairing. And yes, from Jenkins’ “Cantus Lacrimosus” to “I do like to be beside the seaside”. Irresistible!

Karl Jenkins has three further items in the form of “Benedictus from The Armed Man”, “Dies Irae from Requiem” and “One Song, from The Peacemakers”. Leonard Bernstein is represented by three pieces with excerpts from “Candide”, “Chichester Psalms” and “West Side Story”.

The standards “Moon River” and “Fly Me to the Moon” add a jazz/easy listening element to the programme. Things get a little louder with a “Queen medley”, and a little playful with Flanders and Swan’s (with a little help from Mozart) “Ill Wind”. Mozart gets his “Gloria from Mass in C” in, as well as “Ave Verum”, so he should be happy.

With all of this, and items from The Carpenters and Randy Newman, plus loads more I am feeling quite Summery already. I don’t want to wish my life away but roll on July.
