A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum

P&P Present “A Funny Thing Happened on the way to the Forum” by Steven Sondheim

From 12th June to 16th June 2012
At The Barrington Theatre, Penny’s Walk, Ferndown, Dorset, BH22 9TH

“Something for everyone, a comedy tonight” ….Stephen Sondheim’s opening lyric sets the tone for Broadway’s greatest farce. Light, fast-paced, witty, irreverent and one of the funniest musicals ever written. The hilarious book is by Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart (creators of the “M*A*S*H” TV series) who take comedy back to its roots, combining situations from time-tested, 2000 year old bawdy comedies of Roman playwright Plautus with the infectious energy of classic vaudeville. The result is a non-stop laugh-fest in which a crafty slave (Pseudolus) struggles to win the hand of a beautiful but slow-witted courtesan (Philia) for his naïve young master (Hero), in exchange for freedom.

The show premiered on Broadway in 1962 and went on to win the Tony award for Best Musical and Best Book of a Musical.
